I watched Netflix’s new series, Spinning Out, this week. I don’t know that I’m typically going to post about TV shows on this blog, but I wanted to mention this one due to the way that mental illness is portrayed. It seemed that the writer took the time to research bipolar disorder and I think that it was actually a responsible and accurate portrayal. That’s pretty rare! I’m usually left feeling frustrated after I watch a show that is supposed to cover mental illness (the thought of 13 Reasons Why still makes my blood pressure skyrocket), but I really think that this one did a great job. The show covered living and trying to cope with mental illness rather than using the disorder for shock value.
The show in itself is pretty addictive, too. It’s about the world of competitive figure skating and it’s definitely got that CW feel of melodrama (which admittedly can be a bit over the top at times). When I first saw a preview, I was expecting it to be a knockoff of Black Swan and the first few minutes of the show definitely seemed that way. However, it was actually a lot more light-hearted than expected. I liked it and felt that I was hooked after the first two episodes. Plus, Effy from Skins is in it, so that makes it worth it.
